Build description

A compact, single-button satellite surface built for Companion v4 using the M5 AtomS3. Supports external RGB rear LED, full-screen bitmap mode, and a new high-visibility text mode with extra-large fonts for simple labels. Includes WiFi config portal, OTA updates, and automatic MAC-based device ID. Perfect for on-stage triggers, tally, timers, and status displays. Features Uses the M5 AtomS3 (ESP32-S3 / 0.85″ 128×128 display) Two selectable display modes: • Bitmap mode – full-screen rendering of Companion’s 72×72 bitmaps (upscaled) • Text mode – fast, low-latency text with COLOR/TEXTCOLOR support Extra-big font for 1–2 characters Ultra-large font for 3 characters Large font for 4–6 characters Multi-line auto-wrapped text for longer labels External RGB LED on G8/G5/G6 with G7 as Ground (mirrors key colour) WiFiManager config portal (hold button for 5 seconds) OTA firmware updates (ArduinoOTA) Auto deviceID: “AtomS3_XXXXXX” (from full MAC) Companion v4 Satellite API: TEXT, KEY-STATE, COLOR/TEXTCOLOR, BRIGHTNESS, PING v1.3 TEXT mode no longer requests bitmaps, reducing traffic and improving responsiveness Hardware Connections G8 – LED Red G5 – LED Green G6 – LED Blue G7 – LED Ground (Use a common-cathode RGB LED with G7 as ground.) Installation & Usage Flash firmware to the AtomS3. On boot the device shows a startup screen, then “Waiting for Companion…”. In Companion v4, go to Surfaces → Add Device → enter the displayed deviceID. Hold the front button for 5 seconds to open the WiFi config portal. (SSID = deviceID) Configure Companion IP/port and choose display mode (bitmap or text). Press the button to trigger the assigned action. The external LED mirrors the Companion key’s colour. In TEXT mode, set TEXT and COLOR/TEXTCOLOR in Companion — the device renders automatically. Troubleshooting LED colours wrong → Confirm wiring; must be common-cathode (G7 = Ground). Not connecting → Check Companion IP/port and ensure both devices are on the same network. Text shows only one letter → Update to v1.3, which fixes text rendering and removes bitmap fallback. Version History v1.3 – New text-only behaviour, no bitmap requests, faster rendering, improved font scaling. v1.2 – General stability and UI tweaks. v1.1 – Fixed LED PWM output.
